As per Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), khadi sales in Gujarat have grown 40 per cent over the past two years. The state sold khadi worth Rs 165 crore in the financial year 2017-18, compared to Rs 118 crore in 2015-16. Big corporates and brands such as Arvind, Reliance Industries, and Raymond’s have purchased khadi in huge quantities in the form of unfinished fabrics. These companies’ process and dye the fabric, make garments, and retail them. This has given a major boost to khadi sales in India. A number of fashion designers from across Ahmedabad have begun taking up revival projects with khadi. This has helped popularise the material among the masses. Shailini Amin, an architect-turned-fashion entrepreneur, started her own venture, Moral Fibre, to promote khadi as a hand-crafted fabric that is sustainable. So far, she has employed 2,000 small artisans including spinners and weavers and exports around 85 per cent of her production.
